INTRODUCTION
Tales from the Middle Cosmos is a science-fiction setting teaming with aliens, cosmic factions and magic taking place in our Milky Way galaxy but without humanity as its central focus. The Middle Cosmic Age is concurrent with the present-day, but for consistency profiles on this website will be written in the past-tense.
The galaxy is widely populated and home to multiple empires, democracies, and independent planets, many of which members of and overseen by the Galactic Assembly. Many of the largest interstellar empires, such as the Constancy or the Synthoid Empire, and not members of the Assembly, and other landless factions like Zathu's armada, the Omen, are equally as powerful as these polities. In recent times the actions of these roaming armies has motivated a Dark Forest-like attitude among many minor polities.
Humanity as a whole was not a member of the wider galactic community but in ages past some humans had left Earth, known as Dirt in the Middle Cosmos. Dirt, like many other planets in the galaxy, are Reservation Worlds and not to be contacted or approached by other sentients in hopes to shield them from the resource extraction efforts of Zathu, or the genocidal campaigns of the Constancy.
One of the most important features of the Middle Cosmos is the connecting ethereal energy known as Binds. Binds were responsible for the connectivity of all matter and large bodies like planets and stars arehuge collections of this energy and were the sources of celestial magic. The most commonplace Bind in the galaxy was life itself. Binds were utilised in enchantments, where a Bind was formed between the weapon and the powers of the celestial body. Binds were also integral to the function of the Cosmic Tree, the primary mode of interstellar travel, as entire solar systems were connected by this ethereal energy. Individuals known as Wayfinders were able to navigate the Cosmic Tree and large groups of them were also responsible for creating new Binds to connect star systems to the Cosmic Tree.
